For a long time, the ocean has been a ubiquitous presence on Earth, yet truly understood by only a few. Towards the ocean, humans continuously engage in a Stockholm-like psychological projection, similar to their attitude towards the universe.
Under the protection of technology, the nearshore has lost its true danger, becoming a major symbol of the spectacle society. Transportation and media have eliminated the sense of unfamiliarity inland people have towards the ocean, often even leading them to develop positive imaginations. Interestingly, coastal residents still retain a sense of awe and fear towards the ocean.
The different attitudes people have when gazing at the ocean reflect the omissions and alterations that occur when the social machine transmits information.
